Microsoft Commits $17.5 Bn To Expand India’s Cloud Capacity And Accelerate AI Adoption

Microsoft will invest USD 17.5 billion in India to significantly expand its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, CEO Satya Nadella announced on X. The commitment marks one of the company’s largest long-term bets on India as a strategic hub for enterprise software, hyperscale cloud services and advanced AI development, as per media reports.

The investment will be deployed across new data centres, high-performance AI infrastructure, digital skilling programmes, and expanded partnerships with enterprises, startups and public-sector institutions. While Microsoft has not outlined a precise rollout timeline, the company said the capital infusion underscores its goal of accelerating India’s digital transformation at scale.

This announcement builds on Microsoft’s earlier USD 3 billion commitment for India over two years to strengthen its cloud and AI capabilities. The fresh capital signals an expanded focus on infrastructure buildout, higher computing capacity and broader deployment of AI models across sectors such as banking, retail, healthcare, manufacturing, and public services.

Microsoft currently operates multiple data-centre regions in India and serves a wide base of enterprises, developers and government agencies through its Azure cloud platform. The latest investment comes amid a global surge in capital allocation by technology firms toward AI training infrastructure, high-density data-centre networks and next-generation computing systems, as competition intensifies in enterprise AI adoption.
