PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates HCL-Foxconn Chip Plant In UP To Boost Semiconductor Manufacturing
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a
semiconductor manufacturing facility being set up by a joint venture between
HCL Technologies and Foxconn in Uttar Pradesh, marking a key step in India’s
push to build a domestic chip ecosystem.
Addressing workers, industry executives and local stakeholders virtually
at the ceremony, the prime minister said the project would generate employment,
attract investments and strengthen India’s technology capabilities. He noted
that the facility would contribute to greater self-reliance in semiconductor
design and manufacturing.
The upcoming unit is expected to manufacture chips used across a wide
range of applications, including smartphones, consumer electronics, automobiles
and defence systems. The project is part of India’s broader strategy to reduce
dependence on imports and position itself as a competitive player in the global
semiconductor value chain.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the sector, Modi said
semiconductors form the backbone of modern technology and domestic production
would help create high-quality job opportunities for skilled youth while
supporting innovation-led growth.
The facility is also expected to generate indirect employment through
ancillary industries such as logistics, services, component manufacturing and
research and development. State officials said the investment could accelerate
the development of a high-technology manufacturing ecosystem and attract
further investments into the region.
Industry experts note that India’s semiconductor push comes amid global
efforts to diversify chip manufacturing beyond traditional hubs such as Taiwan,
South Korea and the United States, following supply-chain disruptions and
rising geopolitical risks.
The project aligns with the Union government’s semiconductor mission,
which offers financial incentives, policy support and infrastructure assistance
to attract global partnerships and build long-term manufacturing and design
capabilities in the country.
