Sarvam Signs MoU With Defence Ministry To Deploy AI Projects
AI
firm Sarvam has signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the
Ministry of Defence’s Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) to develop
and deploy artificial intelligence projects across the Indian Army, Navy and
Air Force, marking one of India’s broadest defence AI collaborations with a
domestic company.
The agreement
establishes an umbrella framework for AI programmes spanning the three Services
as well as joint and integrated organisations under HQ IDS, allowing multiple
projects to be executed under a single collaboration.
Under the MoU,
Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI applications for operational,
training and decision-support use cases, while also providing technical support
after deployment. HQ IDS will facilitate engagements across the Services as
projects are rolled out.
The company said
the framework will enable the Services to use common AI foundation models,
agentic infrastructure, geospatial systems and perception technologies,
allowing lessons from one Service’s projects to be applied across others.
The
collaboration comes as India expands its push to build indigenous defence
technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with artificial
intelligence becoming an increasingly important component of military
modernisation.
According to
Sarvam, the projects will focus on decision-support systems, target acquisition
and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter chain, while retaining human
oversight over operational decisions. The AI systems will be built using
Indian-developed technology and deployed on sovereign infrastructure.
The work will be
executed through Chanakya, Sarvam’s dedicated national security and defence
division, which will use the company’s AI stack, including its Sarvam 105B
foundation model.
“To work with
the three Services on the nation’s defence is an honour and a privilege,”
Sarvam Co-founder Pratyush Kumar said in a statement, adding that the company
would apply the highest standards in delivering the projects.
The company said
the partnership would include projects aimed at creating an AI layer that
connects multiple elements of India’s defence capabilities across the Services.
